Know Your Rights

Prior to the enactment of specific laws concerning the GLBT community, multiple human rights regulations were already protecting anyone based on sexual orientation and/or gender orientation. Title I of the DC Code Chapter 25 § 1-2502, defines it as:

(28) "Sexual orientation" means male or female homosexuality, heterosexuality and bisexuality, by preference or practice.

The following laws and regulations may apply to the GLBT community, including:

Specific acts and amendments to acts include:

  • Bias-Related Crime Act of 1989
  • Omnibus Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2008 (Law 17-231))
  • Jury and Marriage Amendment Act of 2009, B18-0010, A18-0070B18-0010, A18-0070

Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the Religious Freedom & Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009 into law on Dec. 15, 2009. After 30 days, the District government review period ended and the law went into effect unopposed on March 3, 2010.
